| Dick Sears was in his forties when he graduated from Reppert School of Auctioneering in 1957. Respect that he had among farmers and dairy cattle breeders allowed him to build his auction business quickly.
Larry, his son, graduated from Reppert in 1958. One year later he had been drafted into the Army. When he returned, he lived in Vermont and Wisconsin for the next seven years and had little opportunity to be selling. After coming back to Iowa in 1969 to farm, Larry began working for Dick in the auction business, making pedigree announcements for dairy cattle auctions and sharing the auctioneering for farm, household and estate auctions. Larry took over the business in 1986 and Dick worked for him until he fully retired. From 1995 until 2004, auctions were held at the Old Factory Auction Center, a leased building originally built as a buggy factory in 1910. The building was purchased by the Iowa Transportation Museum in 2003 and we vacated the building July 31, 2004. Auctions are now held in the Exhibit Building at the Poweshiek County Fairgrounds in Grinnell. The building is air conditioned, heated and has a nice kitchen-dining area. Though no longer farming, Larry still enjoys farm machinery and dairy cattle auctions. |
![]() Larry Sears is the auctioneer and has done every job connected with the auction business, even taking very short turns as clerk. (He would rather auctioneer). In addition to estate, antique, equipment and cattle auctions, he is always willing to provide his services for charity and benefit auctions. Nancy Sears has retired from clerking, but handles most of the incoming phone calls. |
